To find the answer to your question quickly, use Apple+F (Mac) or Ctrl+F (PC) to search for relevant terms on this page.

- Does the app work on its own?

The ioShutter™ app won’t control your camera without the ioShutter™ cable. Download the ioShutter™ app to play around with and check it out before buying your cable. To disable the automatic warning that prompts you to plug your cable in, simply go into ‘Settings’ and set ‘Reminders’ to ‘Off’.

- Which cameras is ioShutter™ compatible with?

Lots, with more to come. ioShutter™ is available for Canon, Hasselblad, Samsung and Pentax cameras with the small minijack, and for pro Canon cameras with the N3 connectors. ioShutter for Nikon works with every current Nikon DSLR. Let us know on Twitter what should be next, or in the ioShutter™ app using the ‘Feedback’ button! Check the “Features” page for details.

- Why do I have to pay more for the Pro app?

The free ioShutter™ Lite app gives you everything a shutter release cable will and a lot more. ioShutter Lite enables you to trigger your camera without touching it. Super useful and fun for lots of reasons:

  • Essential when shooting long exposures.
  • Never hide behind your camera again! Chat with the people you’re photographing instead of hiding behind your camera – and snap the shutter when they’re engaged and relaxed, for great natural candid shots!
  • Lock your camera’s shutter open for awe-inspiring shots of cityscapes, the night sky and more.
  • When you lock the shutter button down in ioShutter Lite and Pro, the timer counts the length of your exposure!
  • The functions drawer opens up some serious (and super-fun) extra functions like timelapse, ClapToSnap™ and ShakeToTake™ settings.
  • You can stack ioShutter functions, for example to set your timelapse to start in 60 seconds.

All from the free app !
The Pro app has all the same fantastic control options plus makes every function fully customisable and programmable, perfect for the inner OCD mega-serious photographer inside you!

- Reliability… sometimes my camera doesn’t fire when I tap ioShutter’s™ button, or the first Timelapse exposure doesn’t fire.

Check to see if you’ve got your camera set to “Only trigger when Focus Lock achieved”. On rare occasions with this setting, if your camera can’t find focus, the trigger may not fire the camera when you tap the button.

To ensure total reliability, set your focus to Manual (particularly for timelapse) and give your camera a moment to wake up when tapping the button by slowly touching and releasing rather than a lighting-fast ninja tap. This is no different from normal use of your camera; if you mash your shutter button really quickly it often won’t fire your camera.

- Reliability… sometimes the app behaves strangely.

First of all, check that your volume is turned up to maximum.

When you close an app on most iOS devices, they continue to run in the background. Eventually, there are so many apps running, that the app that you want to use may not run reliably.

CLICK HERE to find out how to quickly and easily restart the app.

iOS devices are as much a computer as they are a music player or telephone. While we often shut down our computers every day, we often never do this with our iPhones, iPads and iPod touches.

If restarting the app doesn’t work, try restarting your device. It’s easy, simple and safe to do.

In every case we’ve heard of the ioShutterSLR app acting strangely, these tips have always solved it!

- Why are there On/Off switches as well as Cancel/Save buttons in the functions?

This gives you the option to save changes you’ve made to a function, or exit the screen without changes. Let’s say you’ve got a function set up but you want to check some settings. You go back into the function to have a look at some different settings but decide you were happy with your preset. Without the Cancel/Save buttons, every time you leave the screen ioShutter™ will save the setting you’re looking at. Adding the Cancel/Save buttons gives you more flexibility to check or change parameters.

- What happens if someone phones, texts or iMessages me?

If you’re using ioShutter™ on an iPhone for, say, a long TimeLapse or Bulb exposure and you don’t want it to be interrupted, put your iPhone in “Airplane” mode in Settings. Or use an iPod touch. Or an iPad.

- Why isn’t ioShutter™ wireless?

It would cost a lot more and be a lot more complicated. Simple = Better.

- Does ioShutter™ work with compacts?

Yes, some of them; particularly the Canon G10, G11 and G12. More to come.

- Does ioShutter™ trigger video?

ioShutter™ controls the shutter button of your camera. If your video is started and stopped by the shutter button, like with the Canon G10, G11 and G12, then ioShutter™ can trigger video. You can even use it to schedule the video starting, or by using the Pro app timelapse settings you can even schedule when the video stops too!

- Is ioShutter™ waterproof?

Don’t be silly. Would you use your iPad as an umbrella? No.

- What happens if my iDevice goes to sleep?

ioShutter™ keeps your device awake. Because of subtle differences between the systems of iPhones, iPads and iPod touches, ioShutter™ isn’t reliable if it lets your device sleep. We’re working on it though, to conserve battery life, and once we’ve solved it, device sleep will appear in an app upgrade.

- Hellooo ?!?! Some of us use Android ?

ioShutter SLR currently only works with iOS on iPhones, iPads (all of ‘em!) and iPod touches.

- I’ve got a suggestion for ioShutter™! or EEUW! I found a bug!

Hit the ‘Feedback’ button in the ioShutter™ App Settings panel to let us know your suggestion.

- I’ve already got an intervalometer, why do I want ioShutter™?!

Intervalometers are another thing to carry, and you’ve always got your phone with you, right? Not to mention they run out of batteries, only do ooooh…. around half the things you can do with ioShutter™ and are based on old-school LCD watch-style tech that isn’t programmable like ioShutter™. Let’s face it… anything you can do on your iPhone is just… well… better. With ioShutter™ you can schedule your timelapse to start at 5:50am to catch the sunrise. And trigger your camera when the toddler you’re photographing giggles. And a lot more!

- I LOVE ioSHUTTER™! But now I’ve shot this timelapse, what the heck do I do with all these photos?!

There are a ton of options. The simplest is a funky little app called Timelapse on the Mac App Store. If you’re on a PC or looking for more advanced software, there’s a fantastic Lightroom plugin called LRTimelapse here (click on these descriptions to jump over to their sites).

- I think ioShutter™ should be FREE! Why should I pay for it?

ioShutter™ was invented by James Madelin, a British photographer and inventor living in New Zealand. Creating something totally new is challenging, exciting and expensive. With no precedent, every step of the way involves hard work and effort to bring something new and cool into the world that has never been done before. It takes time and money. There are the challenges of making sure every photographer around the world who shares the creator’s dream and wants to get hold of an ioShutter™ cable can.

Ensuring smooth international distribution so that photographers can buy the gear you love is just another part of a huge puzzle that is running a modern international company. Even a tiny, exciting, innovative bootstrapped one.

Copying something that’s already been done is easy, fast and cheap. You can do it with no understanding of all the hard work hidden from view. It’s likely that within a few weeks or months you’ll be out of business, leaving every photographer who bought your copied gear alone. Don’t just take my word for it, some of the world’s leading tech journalists have noticed too.
You don’t get awesome for nothing.
